12 Best Places in London for Afternoon Tea…

Afternoon tea is a long standing English tradition and the perfect way to indulge with family and friends in the stressful lead up to a wedding. Whether you are looking to spend an intimate afternoon with your fiancé or a champagne filled afternoon with the girls, I have spent the last 2 months visiting all the best establishments in London so I can report back to you on the latest interpretations of this timeless treat…

    Brown’s Hotel

From the moment I stepped in to this traditional tea room I knew I was in for a treat! The pianist was busy playing and the waiters were serving up the most delicious looking treats, I even spotted an old-fashioned cake trolley piled high with goodies.

For those of you who don’t know Brown’s Hotel is the original and oldest tea room and has recently been awarded the Tea Guild’s very prestigious ‘Top London Afternoon Tea 2009’. I have to say that it definitely deserves it, everything about the afternoon tea was fabulous from the extensive choice of teas, including their delicious own blend (they also have two tea sommeliers for those who would like a little advice, I had the gorgeous fresh rose bud tea), to the beautiful presentation of the cake stand!

When the cake stand arrived, it consisted of a layer of lovely traditional sandwiches, then a layer of the most beautiful warm scones (and if they happen to go cold while you eat they will happily bring you warm ones again) and lastly up top a layer of decadent sweet treats. Everything was delicious especially the hand made macaroons which were to die-for!! As if this wasn’t enough, once you have made your way through this wonderful tea you are then tempted over to the dark side by the trolley of hand made cakes. Obviously in the name of research I couldn’t say no, so I was served up an enormous slice of Victoria Sponge and of course it was cake perfection!

Guests of The English Tea Room never leave hungry, as the Afternoon Tea is continuously replenish at no additional charge. No matter what a guest’s dietary requirements may be, from gluten free to nut allergies, the team of chefs at Brown’s Hotel will ensure that everyone has the chance to enjoy their award-winning afternoon tea (48 hours advanced notice is required to prepare these special teas).

If you are a larger group then on Saturdays and Sundays you can hire out the dining room upstairs free of charge which would be perfect for your own private hen party!
I would really recommend this afternoon tea for anyone who enjoys a little decadence, whether it’s you and your girlfriends wanting to get all dressed up for an afternoon or you and your mother to share a special pre-wedding treat. This is also somewhere I would come with my fiancé a couple of days before the wedding to share some special stress-free time together and wouldn’t it just make the perfect place to come back to every year for an anniversary treat!

I also wanted to mention that the Head Pastry Chef of Brown’s Hotel also hosts a series of ‘Tea-Torials’, offering participants the perfect environment in which to soak up the knowledge of London’s most talented chefs. This is a unique experience with a professional, but informal, day of culinary learning, topped off with a fabulous meal. Watch out for my post about this next week!

    The Ritz

What can I say,… The Ritz was everything I had hoped it would be, from the moment we walked in to the grand building we were blown away by the beautiful décor and elegant setting of the dining room.

Afternoon Tea, an institution in itself, is the perfect complement to these fine surroundings and is served daily in the Palm Court. Popular since the hotel opened and enjoyed by a wide and varied audience, it has become the quintessential British experience and has attracted patrons through the years such as King Edward VII, Charlie Chaplin, Sir Winston Churchill, General De Gaulle and Judy Garland.

We were shown to our seats and spent the first 10 minutes admiring our surroundings and the beautiful chinaware and silverware whilst browsing through the extensive choice of loose-leaf teas. We settled on the Passion Fruit and Orange and the Ritz Royal English, they were both delicious.

The food then arrived served on a beautiful three tier silver cake stand, one large plate of freshly cut sandwiches with a selection of smoked salmon, cucumber, egg mayonnaise, roast ham, chicken and cheddar cheese fillings (sandwiches are replenished throughout your tea). The top plate was a delectable selection of cakes and pastries such as a coconut macaroon, a gorgeous fruit tart and the most rich and delicious chocolate cake. The freshly baked apple and raisin scones with strawberry preserve and clotted Devonshire cream are brought over warm whenever you require them, they were perfection!

The service was impeccable throughout, every table was well looked after and never neglected for a moment! The elegant ambiance of tea at The Ritz is complete with musical accompaniment from the resident pianist who never ceases to delight with his own rendition of classical favourites.

It should be noted that a formal dress code sets the tone for tea in the Palm Court – gentlemen are required to wear a jacket and tie, jeans and trainers are not permitted in any of the public areas of the hotel.

This would be a wonderful place to bring anyone that you would like to thank for being involved in your wedding for a special ‘thank-you’ treat; your mother, mother in-law or maid of honour. For me this is also somewhere I would love to bring my fiancé.

    The Dorchester – Spatisserie

Tucked away in The Dorchester Spa is the uniquely named ‘Spatisserie‘, an opulent but intimate tea salon that was recently launched this Summer. This is definitely different from your usual afternoon tea, it is the perfect place for you and your hens to spend an afternoon of indulgence!

After you have spent the morning being pampered in their stunning new spa you can sit back and relax in the Spatisserie, a small salon room with just a few tables which is perfect for a hen party of anything from 5-18 girls.

The afternoon tea was wonderful; I opted for the ‘organic plum with fresh mint’ tea which was so delicious I sipped my way through two pots! The sandwiches and cakes then arrived, presented beautifully on a silver cake stand. These sandwiches were not the traditional sandwiches you would expect at afternoon tea, there was a delicious selection of breads with toppings such as goats cheese and smoked salmon filled with egg mayonnaise and caviar. They were all scrumptious, we even managed to get through a second plate!

On the top layer sat the spectacular looking desserts featuring gorgeous treats such as shortbread topped with clotted cream and my personal favourite, the fresh raspberry éclair, it was simply out of this world, like something you would expect to find only in France!

We were a little disappointed when we found out that there were no scones on offer but this was soon forgotten when we were offered the cake menu! Obviously we couldn’t resist trying a few treats such as The Dorchester Spa’s signature Face Cream Cake, Blueberry Cheesecake, Chocolate Fudge cake and Lemon Drizzle cake. The Blueberry Cheesecake was to-die-for, a light fluffy cheesecake with a blueberry compote filling, probably one of the best cheesecakes I have ever tasted!

    Claridge’s

Afternoon tea at Claridge’s is something I have always wanted to do and I was not disappointed. For over 100 years Claridge’s has been renowned for its sumptuous afternoon tea and stepping inside I was greeted by a beautiful, large, art deco Foyer filled with an eclectic mix of customers. A classical pianist and accompanying musician both add to the elegant atmosphere.

Our table was perfectly laid with green and white striped porcelain and stunning silverware. With over 30 teas to choose from we were spoilt for choice! Claridge’s serves tea from all over the world including, amongst more traditional teas, the glamorous Royal White-Silver Needles, which is only picked on two days of the year at dawn and then processed entirely by hand! Claridge’s has even got its own delicious blend of tea, Claridge’s Royal, but I settled on the Passion Plum With Ginseng and it was perfect!
The sandwiches then arrived which were delicious and with fillings such as smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber with a touch of rocket on onion bread and the fresh poached salmon (which was to die for) we couldn’t resist a second plate when it was offered!

The pastries looked too good to eat but of course we got over that pretty quickly and they were wonderful. The pastries, which change every day can include a range of rich chocolate cakes, seasonal fruit tartlets and desserts presented in shot glasses with a variety of flavours and textures. There were plenty to choose my favourite being the hand made macaroon! The freshly baked warm raisin and apple scones were also beautiful; they were light and fluffy and I went through two side dishes of Cornish clotted cream and tea-infused jam!!

Just around the corner from Bond Street this is a wonderful place to come with your bridesmaids after an afternoon of pre-wedding shopping.

Cost: Afternoon tea £33 per person, Champagne tea £40 per person, Taittinger Millesime 2002 Champagne Tea £50 per person

What time is tea served between? 3pm, 3.30pm, 5pm or 5.30pm daily

    The Metropolitan

The Metropolitan has always been famous for its cutting-edge, legendary cocktails and late night parties but this July the hotel introduced the traditional British occasion of afternoon tea twisted with a cool touch of avant-garde chic!

This is definitely one for the young and trendy with afternoon tea being served in the stylish bar. This is a place where all the cool kids come to be seen chatting over afternoon treats and sipping champagne!

The Met bar wanted to bring a modern twist to the traditional afternoon tea that would appeal to their younger style conscious guests! They have pulled this off perfectly with their Afternoon De-light, this tea not only looks amazing but is very waist-line friendly and features a menu that combines healthy interpretations of old classics such as breadless sandwiches served in glasses with delicious fillings and olive oil scones and no butter cupcakes with low fat crème fraiche icing.

Everything was delicious, especially their breadless sandwiches and it all looked stunning, but I am from the school of if you are going to indulge, indulge properly and the olive oil scones just can’t compare to the buttery scones I have become accustomed to! But for any bride who is a little worried about those last few pounds in the lead up to the wedding then this really is a fun and figure-friendly option.

I would recommend coming here with all your hens for a late afternoon tea and then spend the rest of the afternoon and evening hanging out in the trendy Met bar!
The Met also has regular monthly promotions to celebrate significant calendar dates, which make for fabulous hen parties – forthcoming promotions include ‘Afternoon De-Light by Lulu Guinness’ during London Fashion Week September 2009. They also organise ‘Cour-tea-san De-Light’ on Saturdays once per month – seduction classes with your cake on the side – check out this post about the ‘Cour-tea-san De-Light’.

    Cost: £24 per person

What time is tea served between? 3pm-6pm Monday to Saturday

How far in advance should a booking be made? 24 hours notice is required

Largest group that can be accommodated? Up to 12 guests in any group

Live Music times (if applicable)? N/A

Can the plates be replenished? Although this is not advertised, they endeavour to replenish the cupcakes and scones

    The Berkeley

pret-a-portea-spring-summer-09-11The Pret-a-Portea at the Berkeley is really something special, this is a fabulous alternative to traditional afternoon tea for the young and fashion conscious crowd!

The small intimate Caramel room is perfect for small to medium groups and the service was friendly and attentive.

For the ultimate fashion touch the hotel has forged links with Thomas Goode of Mayfair who have produced a bespoke collection of Paul Smith fine bone china to be used for the tea and for the icing on the cake. Chilled champagne is served in Baccarat crystal flutes.

Firstly came the lovely sandwiches. We were given a plate each, which I was very pleased about, then instead of scones came a delectable selection of savoury canapés such as lightly-seared tuna which was delicious. Then came the stand of cakes and pastries inspired by the latest fashion season’s catwalk designs, from shot glasses of brightly coloured mousse to handbag shaped cakes and bikini and dress biscuits, they almost looked to good to eat!! The Josh Goot blocked dress of strawberry pannacotta and mango crème was particularly good!

Don’t worry if you can’t finish it all as they encourage you to take home the cakes and cookies that you can’t eat in a stylish handbag shaped take-away box.

My choice of Pear and Caramel tea was the perfect accompaniment to this sweet afternoon experience!

I would highly recommend this tea for young fashion conscious women who want something a bit different from the traditional afternoon tea.

Cost: £35 per person, £43 including a glass of Laurent Perrier champagne

What time is tea served between? 1-6pm daily

Live Music times (if applicable)? N/A

Can the plates be replenished? Yes

    The Goring

For the summer season, The Goring, London’s oldest privately owned hotel, introduces its new, mouth-watering Country Garden Tea to celebrate the Chelsea Flower Show (19 May to the end of August). The beautiful traditional tea room overlooks the hotels stunning private garden (which officially measures in as bigger than centre court at Wimbledon ). When weather permits you can enjoy your afternoon tea al-fresco on the veranda.

The whole tea was magnificent from start to finish! I started off with a pot of lovely mango and strawberry tea before being served their delicious Summer Sting champagne cocktail, an irresistible fusion of Nettle Cordial, Sandringham Apple Juice, Grenadine and Champagne served in a tall glass. This was followed by an Amuse Bouche of Eggs Drumkilbo (Lobster, egg, crayfish, tomato, mayonnaise, chicken consommé jelly), apparently this is favoured by Queen Elizabeth and I have to say it was quite delicious!

We were then presented with a cake stand loaded with a beautiful selection of finger sandwiches including the particularly delicious Guinea fowl and Wild Mushroom. The top stand offered a choice of delectable bite-size pastries ranging from Lavender Crème Brulée (which was my favourite) to Elderflower and Strawberry Tartlet and the lip-smacking Apple Jelly and Blackberry Foam Crumble. Chelsea Buns are also on the menu of course throughout the Chelsea Flower Show. After all this I still somehow managed to get through two deliciously warm scones with lashings of clotted cream and jam!

The Goring would be the perfect setting for a ‘Summer Afternoon Tea Party’ with your hens. Summer dresses, glasses of champagne and cakes aplenty, what more could a group of girls ask for!

Cost: £32.50 per person (including cocktail)

What time is tea served between? 3pm-5pm

How far in advance should a booking be made? Approx two weeks.

Largest group that can be accommodated? If seated on one table 16 people, however they will also accommodate parties of 20 people on spilt tables

Live Music times (if applicable)? N/A

Can the plates be replenished? Yes

    Bob Bob Ricard

For those of you who don’t know, Bob Bob Ricard, is a new restaurant and bar arranged over two ?oors designed by David Collins (of The Wolseley). It opened in late 2008 in fashionable Golden Square, Soho and I loved it!!

I loved the art deco finish and the inclusive diner style booth seating is offset with lavish extravagance – chandeliers, mirrors, marble – and eccentric touches (including my favourite, the little ‘Champagne Buttons’ on each table, you simply ring the buzzer and a waiter will bring you over a glass of champagne!! Genius!!). The waiters are dressed in pink blazers for the boys and blue waistcoats for the girls which I thought was great.

We stared off our tea with a delicious pot of loose-leaf tea, we were still admiring the crazy décor when the food arrived! I have to say that I was a little worried beforehand that the tea here wouldn’t live up to those at the more traditional establishments, but everything looked great and we were not disappointed. The bottom layer of sandwiches was delicious; the gorgeous Coronation Chicken On Carrot & Coriander Bread was so yummy I could have polished off a whole plate of them. The selection of cakes was very nice with the Chocolate Baleron and Victoria Sandwich were particularly good!

This is the perfect place for a young group of hens and I would recommend a late afternoon tea as housed in the basement you will find the bar which is a remarkable space, open until 3am serving wines, champagnes, spirits and cocktails. You and your hens can head down after the tea and sip cocktails and party the night away.

    Cost:
Afternoon Tea £23.50, Afternoon Tea With A Glass Of Ayala £36

What time is tea served between? Afternoon Tea is available all day/evening. The whole menu is available from 7am – 1am.

How far in advance should a booking be made? Booking in advance is recommended but you can walk in and order one without doing so.

Largest group that can be accommodated? The private dining room can sit 12 max or in terms of booths they can seat up to 6 people.

Live Music times (if applicable)? N/A

Can the plates be replenished? No, the tiered plates are not replenished.

    Palm Court at The Langham

This was one of my personal favourites; from the minute you walked into this grand tea room you knew it was somewhere special! All the staff and waiters were extremely friendly and attentive. With live piano playing in the background at just the right volume we settled in to our comfy seats and chose our tea from the wide selection.
There were two menus available ‘The Wonderland’ and ‘The Bijoux’, so we opted for one of each. When they arrived we were not disappointed, they were stunningly presented on their tall cake stands.

The Wonderland was the more traditional of the two with delicate finger sandwiches with fillings such as Scottish organic salmon with horseradish and watercress and Castle of Mey Beef with Savora mustard. The classic cakes such as Chocolate Gateau, Bakewell Tart and Macaroons were simply divine!

The Bijoux tea was really something special, inspired by the collections of top jewellery designers (in recognition of the hotel’s proximity to the boutiques of Bond Street), this tea stand looked amazing! The sandwiches, which included more exotic fillings such as Cornish Crab and Avocado, Frois Gras with passion fruit and cream cheese with truffle, came on an assortment of different breads and were all delicious! The selection of cakes continued the theme with creations such as the delightful Cartier Love Cookie and Baccarat Crystal Drops!! My personal favourite was the fresh Strawberry Macaroon, it was the best I have ever eaten! The scones then arrived all warm, fresh and delicious. Unfortunately by this point we were only able to manage one each out of the large basket as we were so full from all our indulging!

I would recommend The Langham to everyone but, in particular, I think it would be the perfect setting for a girly afternoon. It would also be a very nice place for a small family gathering.

Cost: The Wonderland Afternoon Tea £33, The Bijoux Tea £40

What time is tea served between? Afternoon Tea is served between 3-5pm; High Tea served between 5-7pm.

How far in advance should a booking be made? For Saturday and Sunday bookings the earlier the better as this is when it’s most popular, however weekday bookings can be made on the day in the morning.

Largest group that can be accommodated? 10 people all on one table; 20-30 people can be accommodated but on separate tables.

Live Music times? Pianist plays from 3-7pm

Can the plates be replenished? Full afternoon tea is replenished once at no charge.

    The Cavendish

This is somewhere I will definitely be going back to. The Cavendish has a lovely relaxed atmosphere, with plenty of large tables and comfy sofas and at just £17 per person this was by far the best value! Not to mention that we each got our own tiered plate of goodies instead of the usual shared cake stands.

When we arrived we immediately felt at ease in this large dining area, we sunk in to a large sofa and browsed through the tea menu. When the food arrived we couldn’t believe the size of the generous, individual plates, one layer was filled with yummy sandwiches such as cornfed chicken with herb mayonnaise and a lovely cheese and sweet tomato jam. The cake layer was just as yummy and I managed to eat all three including an ever so rich and decadent chocolate brownie! All washed down with a pot of peppermint tea and some chocolate truffles it was wonderful. I barely had room for the fruit scones and clotted cream but I went back to them after an hour of lounging on the sofa sipping champagne!

The service was fantastic, they were very attentive and kept making sure we had everything we needed and were enjoying ourselves, they even offered to replenish our plates, I can’t imagine anyone would be able to eat all this and then go back for more!

If a fun and relaxed environment sounds like the perfect setting for your afternoon of eating and drinking with your hens then this is the place for you! This is also the prefect place to come after a busy afternoon shopping with your bridesmaid, or even meet your fiancé here for afternoon tea so you can spend some relaxed time chatting over wedding plans.

To make things even sweeter from the 1st of August 2009 until the 4th of September 2009, The Cavendish will be serving a complimentary glass of Champagne per person to accompany afternoon tea. Simply print off this article and present it whilst enjoying your tea. This offer is not valid with any other special offer.

Cost: £17 per person, £25 with champagne

    Grosvenor House

A rose by any other name would not taste as sweet as the new Grosvenor House Rose Tea which launched this Summer to commemorate the hotel’s 80th birthday!
The dining room at Grosvenor House is very grand and the pianist sets the mood perfectly for an afternoon of indulgence!

The rose inspired afternoon tea was wonderful (although if you do not like the flavour of rose this is not the tea for you and you may want to opt for the traditional afternoon tea). We started off the tea with a delicious glass of Taittinger Rosé champagne and a rare Golden Roseheart tea whilst we settled back to enjoy the live music.

When the food arrived it looked picture perfect on a silver cake stand stacked high with delicate finger sandwiches and a selection of cakes including whisper thin raspberry mille feuilles and the lightest rose macaroons which were so perfect I could have eaten ten of them! After we polished off our sandwiches and cakes we moved on to the scones which were served with Devonshire Clotted Cream and Rose Petal jam with whole Strawberries, simply gorgeous!

I would recommend this tea for taking your mother to as a thank you for her help and support with your wedding or perhaps the mother in-law. It would also be a lovely place for a first meeting between families.

    Cost:
The Rose Tea costs £34.50 per person. A proportion of the profits of all Rose Teas sold will be donated to the Royal Parks Foundation.

What time is tea served between? 3pm-5.30pm daily

Can the plates be replenished? Yes, but it would be at an extra cost.

    The Mandeville

I really liked this modern tea room at the back of the Deville restaurant! With a cool modern décor this is definitely the place for an afternoon with the girls, or with the boys for that matter….

The Mandeville offers two afternoon teas the Fashion tea and the Gentleman’s tea.

The Fashion tea for two was wonderful, served on pink Zandra Rhodes china it was presented beautifully and came with a wide selection of finger sandwiches such as fresh smoked salmon, egg and cress and a selection of pastries and cakes that were simply mouth watering. My personal favourite was the pink meringue and the Queen of Hearts Tarts, yum! There was also a wide selection of scones and pastries with the yummiest, thickest clotted cream and jam!

Now many of you may think ‘Afternoon tea for the boys? that’s a little strange!’ well let me tell you, that was the first reaction I got from my h2b but I have to say he loved it. It was a real treat and something totally different from the usual boys afternoon out! It is a wonderful opportunity for men to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and relax with a whisky whilst munching on a delicious selection of sandwiches such as roast sirloin on ciabatta, chicken satay skewers not to mention the fabulous double chocolate brownies and macaroons. I must admit I was almost jealous of the manly steak sandwiches my h2b was tucking in to!

With a selection of games at the bar, the men can then sit back with a glass of whisky and enjoy a round of poker, chess or perhaps a more old school game of backgammon.
The Mandeville also has a stunning penthouse that brides love to stay in as either part of their hen weekend or whilst they are getting ready for a ceremony. In Summer months the Afternoon Tea can be served on the private penthouse terrace for groups of up to 8 people. Bliss!

Cost: Fashion Afternoon Tea £23.50, Men’s Afternoon Tea £22.50, Whisky Afternoon Tea £30, Champagne Afternoon Tea £31, Champagne Cocktail Afternoon Tea £31

What time is tea served between? 3.00pm and 5.30pm everyday
